Nikon D700x / D800 Status

Nikon D700x DSLR
Nikon D700x / D800 DSLR

For those of you that have read Nikon D4, D4x, 700s, 700x 2011 Lineup, you'll know I expect to see the Nikon D700x in 2011.

Perhaps one of the most written about, sought after, dreamed of DSLR cameras to date, the D700x / D800 will be the perfect camera for a lot of photographers. I know I want one!

The Nikon D700x, also referred to as the Nikon D800 and Nikon D900, will feature the sensor from the current DSLR King, the Nikon D3x. That means we'll be getting the 24 megapixel goodness in the wonderful D700 body, the perfect mating of performance and ergonomics for many shooters.

The Nikon D3x is the BEST camera in a 35mm DSLR that money can buy at the time of this writing. Check out DXOMark to see why.

Now take that BEST ranking and drop it into a smaller, lighter, more ergonomically friendly body, and it's easy to see what all the fuss is about.

The question on most people's minds is "Where is it?" or "Why hasn't Nikon released it yet?"

I touch on this in Nikon D4, D4x, 700s, 700x 2011 Lineup. Basically, I think Nikon didn't want to cannobilize D3x sales until they were close to releasing the D4x.

The Nikon D4x is expected to have a new 38 megapixel sensor, and when it's out, Nikon should have no fear of releasing the Nikon D700x with the D3x's 24MP sensor. The D4x will have no need to fear losing sales to the D700x as it'll be significantly more advanced with signficantly more resolution.

Nikon will have the best of both worlds. The D4x will sell well to those needing the BEST, and the D700x will sell like crazy to the rest of us who want the next closest thing to the BEST at a MUCH BETTER price.

When, in 2011, Nikon releases the Nikon D700x /D800 is dependant on a couple of things.

First off, it'll depend on whether Nikon chooses to release the D700x / D800 just before or just after the Nikon D4x. This could go either way as Nikon could benefit from either choice, especially if they leak info on either camera prior to releasing the other.

For example, let's say Nikon chooses to release the D700x /D800 before the D4x. If they leak info, images, arrange public sightings of the D4x in use, the D700x /D800 will sell very well and not hurt any sales of the D4x as those who would buy the D4x will know it's coming from the leaks.

Conversely, the same strategy could be used if the D4x is released before the D700x /D800.

I think we'll see the Nikon D4x released, or at least announced, first, followed by the Nikon D700x /D800.

When you say?

I expect we'll see the Nikon D4x announced by March 2011, and the D700x /D800 shortly after.
In the meantime, let me know by posting a comment or emailing me if you have any info to share on either the D4x or D700x /D800.

Nikon D4, D4x, D700s, D700x ( D800 ) 2011 Lineup

Nikon D4 DSLR
The Nikon D4 DSLR

I think it's a given now that we won't be seeing a Nikon D700 update for 2010. Call it an educated guess, my opinion, intuition... whatever, but I'd be willing to bet on it.

The good news is... strike that... the GREAT news is that I think we'll see a high megapixel Nikon D700x ( D800 ) in 2011. With the Nikon D4x anticipated in 2011, Nikon should have no problem letting the D700x /D800 have the existing Nikon D3x 24 megapixel sensor.

Now that's a camera a LOT of people are going to want, myself included! A D700 body with the D3x sensor will be a hot seller. I anticipate Nikon having a hard time keeping these in stock in the early days of the roll-out.

Here's how I see the Nikon 2011 Pro Level DSLR Line-Up...

Nikon D700s - Brings the INCREDIBLE Nikon D3s sensor to the super popular Nikon D700 making it capable of seeing in the dark, just like it's big brother. Will also have full 1080p HD video with full manual controls and an external mic input.

Nikon D700x /D800 - Brings the SUPER RESOLUTION D3x sensor to party in a Nikon D700 body. For those that need HIGH resolution, but can't afford the expense of a D4x or don't like the bigger, heavier bodies, this is your camera. May have 1080p HD video, may not. Let's hope it does.

Nikon D4 - Brings a new 16 megapixel sensor to the party, capable of the same SUPERB high ISO of the D3s sensor, maybe even a stop better. Will also have full 1080p HD video with full manual controls and an external mic input. May also have video RAW settings.

Nikon D4x - Brings a new 38 megapixel sensor to the party, putting Nikon back in the lead for highest megapixel sensor available in a DSLR. If you need MAXIMUM resolution, this is your camera. Medium format companies cry like babies when the D4x is officially announced, and plot to sabotage the production facility. May have 1080p HD video, may not. Let's hope it does.
May also have video RAW settings.

Nikon D700x, D800, D900... Where Is It?

Rumors have been flying around the internet for some time now about an up-grade to the Nikon D700. Many of us thought it would have been out by now. I certainly did.

And yet... no D700x, D800, D900 or whatever Nikon decides to name the D700 replacement.

Thom Hogan says he doesn't think there will be a D700 replacement until next year. I'm thinking he may be right.

The big question will be how Nikon structures the levels of the Nikon DSLR line-up. Most people have been thinking of the coming update as a replacement to the D700 having a much higher megapixel sensor.

It's possible the replacement may be a D700s, following in the footsteps of the D3s upgrade. This would see the D700s getting the D3s sensor.

If this was the case, then that leaves the door open for a D700x with something like the D3X sensor. Nikon probably didn't want to do this while the D3X was relatively new, but if a D700x was timed to be introduced just before the D4X comes out, then I could see them having no problem using the D3X 24 megapixel sensor.

This would give Nikon a rock solid DSLR line-up covering all bases.

A D700s at 12 megapixels for super high ISO use for those that prefer a compact pro body.

A D700x at 24 megapixels for super megapixel goodness for those that prefer a compact pro body.

A D4s at 16 megapixels for super high ISO use for those that prefer a full size pro body. I anticipate the D4s to be about a stop better at high ISO than the already incredible D3s.

A D4x at 32 megapixels for super megapixel goodness for those that prefer a full size pro body.

Nikon D700x, D800, D900... Whatever The Name, IT'S COMING!

Rumors abound all over the net. The much talked about, much desired, Nikon D700x, Nikon D800, or Nikon D900... whatever you want to call it, IS COMING!

The two new Nikon lenses that have been rumored for a while now have just been announced. Line up now to get your Nikon 24mm f1.4G AF-S or Nikon 16-35mm f4G ED VR AF-S, or save your pennies and wait for the coming D700x (or D800, or D900, or whatever they end up calling the mini D3X).

I'm getting excited. I recently gave in and purchased a Nikon D700, and I LOVE IT! It's quite possibly the best DSLR ever made, all things considered (price, features, build quality, image quality, focus). Just about the only thing that could make the D700 even better is a big brother D700x.

I've laid out the specs for the D700x in several previous articles, and needless to say, no matter what they call it, the mini D3X is going to be SWEET. A D3x sensor in a D700 body. Yeah baby! That's what I'm talking about.

As much as I love the rugged beauty of the D3s and the D3X, the larger bodies have never been my cup of tea. I've known since the day the D700 was announced that I'd own one soon, and I know right now that the D700x will be mine too. Paired with the D700, I'll have a killer combo of two of the best damn DSLR's on the planet!

I'm going to go out on a limb here and reveal a little insider info, intuition, insight, speculation... whatever you want to call it. We'll be seeing the D700x before Spring, and that's all I can tell ya at the moment.

Nikon D700X - Misconceptions On D700X Pricing

I've had a lot of comments and correspondence from readers who think the Nikon D700X needs to be priced to compete with the Canon 5D MkII.

The 5D MkII with its 21 megapixel sensor is close to the same size as the D3X's 24 megapixel sensor that the D700X will have, but that's where the comparisons end folks.

The Nikon D700X will be the same body as the D700, in other words, a full featured, nearly indestructable, beauty of a DSLR with an autofocus system rivaled by none. The 5D MkII just doesn't come close, other than having almost as many megapixels.

The 5D MkII doesn't have the same PRO level build quality. The 5D MkII doesn't have the fully rounded feature set. Most importantly, the 5D MkII has a dated focus system that is passable at best. Fact is, many 5D MkII users are having problems with the 5D MkII's autofocus.

The Nikon D700X isn't going to be priced at the 5D MkII level. It doesn't have to be. There is nothing else on the market to compete with it. When you build a better product, you set your own pricing. Do you think BMW cares how much Chrysler sells its vehicles for?

The perfect illustration of this is the Nikon D700. It's flying off the shelves everywhere. Loads of Canon shooters have switched to Nikon because of the D700's incredible autofocus, build quality, and high ISO abilities. The D700, like it's big brother the Nikon D3, is a class leading DSLR. They don't really have any true competition in the sense that no one is making a DSLR that equals what the D700 and D3 offer. The D700 is selling strong against the 5D MkII, and the D700 is priced higher. Why would anyone think the D700X will be priced at 5D MkII levels when the D700 isn't?

The Nikon D700 is currently $2995.95 at B&H. The 5D MkII is currently $2699.95. The D700 is $300.00 more, and it's not having any problems competing with the 5D MkII. Why one earth would Nikon bring out the D700X at a 5D MkII price point?

Will The Canon 7D Be Able To Take On The Nikon D700X?

With all the talk of a Canon 7D coming soon, the obvious question is which Nikon DSLR will it be head to head against.

It's unlikely the 7D will be a competitor to the coming Nikon D700X as all indicators so far point to the 7D being either a 12 megapixel or 16 to 18 megapixel (my guess) DSLR. That puts the Canon 7D up against the Nikon D700, or in between the D700 and the D700X, depending on what how many megapixels the 7D sensor ends up being.

That'll be an interesting fight either way, as I don't expect the 7D to be of the same professional caliber build of the D700 and D700X. The Canon 7D will most likely be a 5D MkII / 50D type DSLR, neither of which is on par with the D700 or D700X.

So, the Canon 7D will be an interesting competitor. The 7D is expected to be under $2K, so that gives it a real price advantage over any full frame DSLR on the market, but one can't underestimate the alure of the build quality and feature sets on the D700 and D700X.

I suspect the Canon 7D will be a great seller for Canon regardless, but it likely won't be pulling any Nikon shooters off the Nikon team the way the D700 has been winning over Canon shooters. The 7D may help stop the exodus of Canon shooters to Nikon though, which will be especially fortuitous timing with the Nikon D700X rumored to be coming soon.

Like the Nikon D700 and coming D700X, the Canon 7D will have no real direct competition. Unless Nikon unveils a stripped down FX full frame DSLR before the end of the year, the 7D will enjoy an uncontested position in the DSLR market.

These are interesting times in the world of photography my friends!

**Update: Well, I was wrong and Canon is stupid. The Canon 7D has been announced, and there's no full frame, just an updated 50D. The 7D is DEFINITELY NO Competition for the D700X**

Uncle Bob Leaks Top Secret Info On The Nikon D700X

This Monday is a special Uncle Bob report! I'm about to pass on some juicy TOP SECRET Nikon info on the Nikon D700X that NO one is supposed to know, not even me, good 'ole Uncle Bob.

There's a lot of rumors flying around about this new fan-dangled DSLR that some say Nikon is calling the D700X. Some of them are pretty close to the mark, and some of the D700X rumors are just full of horse hockey. Regardless, what Uncle Bob is about to tell you now about the Nikon D700X (we'll call it the D700X for the sake of argument) is probably going to blow your mind, at least a large chunk of it anyway.

I'd love to start off by telling you how I came to find out about this TOP SECRET D700X info, but I can't. I can tell you it's a VERY long story involving some shady characters, an overnight trip to Bangkok, and a man named Mud, but trust me when I tell you, Uncle Bob did a little bleedin', lots of sweatin', and some runnin' before he got back home with this story.

Some of you have probably heard the rumors that NASA has been working with Nikon on the development of the Nikon D700X. The reason for that is that NASA wanted a suped up DSLR for some missions they have planned, and nothing out there fit the bill. Rumor around NASA headquarters in Washington has it that they went to Nikon because Canon's auto focus problems are even worse in zero G out in space. That, and the fact that NASA is a stickler for quality control and Canon isn't, put NASA working with Nikon on the new D700X.

Now don't get me wrong, the NASA version of the Nikon D700X isn't anything like the one you and I will be able to buy in stores shortly, and I can't even get into the differences with you here in this article. They'd likely have me whisked away, locked up in a little room somewhere, and you'd never hear from your good 'ole Uncle Bob again if I even breathed a whisper of what NASA's D700X cameras can do. Anyways, them's the reasons why NASA got together with Nikon to work on the new D700X.

What I can tell you is that you're going to LOVE the Nikon D700X that will be available to the public! Uncle Bob can't wait to get his hands on one (again). There's some tricks in the new D700X that will leave you smiling like a doggie lying on his back gettin' a full belly scratch. This ain't no D3X in a D700 body. I mean, yeah, it's got some of the Nikon D700 in it, but the D700X is a different beast. It's got bigger fangs and sharper claws than D700. The D700X ain't your Momma's DSLR!

Imagine a new tricked out auto focus system that makes anything you've seen on a DSLR look like a blind man's glasses. Uncle Bob ain't sayin' anythings for sure, but the D700X just might have something like that.

Imagine video like you've never seen from a DSLR, and imagine full auto focus with it. I ain't sayin' a thing, but you might not be wrong to think the D700X is gonna do that too.

Imagine auto ISO for the video, and a new tweaked up version of auto ISO that works like you won't believe, Nikon D700X style. Psst... that just might be on the D700X menu too.

How about voice recognition? Didn't think of that one, did you? I ain't sayin' a thing, but maybe you'll be saying somethin' to your new D700X and it'll listen.

And what about that vari-angle LCD thingie on the D5000? Wouldn't that be neat to have on a DSLR like the D700X? Well what if someone, not Uncle Bob mind you, but what if someone told you that the D700X went one better... has an LCD like nothin' else does... all futuristic like. NASA has a few tricks you don't know about, and you can bet Nikon got their back rubbed after rubbing NASA's.

How many of you wish your DSLR batteries lasted longer? I mean sure, they last real good right now, but what if they could last for 10,000 shots or more? What if you could put a battery in your Nikon D700X and not have to recharge it for a couple months, all the while you're happily shooting a few hundred D700X photos a day? You don't think NASA has some space age battery technology that you just might not know about? They are the National SPACE Agency you know!

Anyways, that's probably about as far as Uncle Bob can safely go in spilling the Nikon D700X beans. Any more, and I'm liable to get tasered and dropped in the back of a white van that no one sees speeding away.

As far as NASA using their versions of the Nikon D700X, well, think bigger than you normally do.

Think small satelites that are essentially D700X DSLR's with mini rocket boosters and a few high-tech satelite communications dishes welded on. Course I'm simplifying it, but you get the picture.

Think NASA version D700X cameras mounted in the nose of the space shuttle, with special SUPER high tech lenses that can withstand higher heat than the shuttle itself and capable of resolving INCREDIBLE detail coupled with the D700X, soon to be legendary, pinpoint accuracy auto focus.

Think even bigger! Think NASA version Nikon D700X bodies built into the frame of the new space station NASA is workin' on that the public doesn't know about. Each D700X fully remote controlled from both NASA headquarters in DC as well as from aboard the space station itself and from aboard the space shuttles.

Uncle Bob knows his readers are a smart bunch, and I think you're probably startin' to see why your Uncle Bob is so gosh darned excited about this little D700X beauty. So here's Uncle Bob's sign-off advice...

Start saving your pennies now. You're gonna want a new Nikon D700X when it hits the shelf, not matter what the cost. Mortgage the house, sell the dog, get your wife a second job... just make sure you got the cash ready to plop down when your Nikon man has that shiny new D700X box sittin' in front of you!

Happy Nikon D700X Dreams!

See you next Monday,
Uncle Bob.

Nikon D700X Buzz Is Sweeping The Internet

Talk of the much anticipated Nikon D700X DSLR is increasing exponentially.

From the popularity of the D700X online, one has to think sales for this DSLR are going to rock Nikon's world.

Everyone from the esteemed Nikon guru Thom Hogan to Super Photographer Chase Jarvis is chiming in on the Nikon D700X.

As to be expected, Nikon Rumors has been steadily posting about the D700X, and they've quoted Thom Hogan as saying he has inside information that the Nikon D700X will be out before November 2009! Please Santa! I'll be good! :)

I personally can't wait to see what the price is going to be. I've seen people claiming it will be as low as $3,500 USD to people claiming it will be $6,000 USD. Personally, I'm guessing $4599.99 (as I noted in my previous article, Nikon D700X vs Nikon D3X). I'm basing this on the price of the Nikon D3X, and the pricing of the Nikon D3 compared to the Nikon D700.

Sure I'd love to see the D700X come in at less at $4K or lower, but I doubt it. The D3X is still at $8K, so it makes no sense for Nikon to sell the D700X for less than half that. I may actually be quite low in my estimate. I could see Nikon pricing the Nikon D700X at $5599.99.

Gotta love the anticipation!

Nikon D700X vs Nikon D3X... A Look At The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Each

Here's what the specs of the Nikon D700X will likely be as compared to what the Nikon D3X specs are.

For me, the D700X holds a number of advantages over the D3X, in the same manner that the Nikon D700 held advantages over the Nikon D3.

I've highlighted what I consider the advantages to be in green and the disadvantages in red.

For others, the green and red might be reversed. Some prefer the larger, heavier Nikon D3X and Nikon D3 style bodies over the lighter, smaller Nikon D700X and Nikon D700 bodies.

Nikon D700X

Price: $4599.99 MSRP (my best guess)

Size: Width 6.3 in. (159.5mm) x Height 6.2 in. (157mm) x Depth 3.4 in. (87.5mm)

Weight: 43.0 oz. (1,220g)

Sensor Format: FX

Sensor Type: CMOS

Sensor Size: 35.9 x 24.0mm

Total Pixels: 25.72 million

Effective Pixels: 24.5 million

Video: HD Movie Mode (again, Nikon would be stupid not to include this on the D700X)

Built-In Flash: Yes

Battery: EN-EL3e

Nikon D3X

Nikon D700x Replacement for the D700?

A lot of rumours are flying around about the Nikon D700x. Some are saying that sources at Nikon have told them it will be coming before the end of the year. Others are saying it will replace the D700. Most agree it will be 24 Megapixels like the Nikon D3X.

First of all, I don't think the D700x will replace the D700. The D700x will be a higher step in the Nikon DSLR product line, similar to the D700 and D3 relationship. If there is a replacement for the D700, it will likely be a D700s, and will be a minor update to the current model (think D2X and D2Xs).

As regular readers well know, I've been talking about this coming DSLR for some time now (see Stuff I Want, The Magic of the Nikon 35mm f2.0, How the Nikon D300 Froze My Bank Account), although I've been calling it the Nikon D800. By the way, my bet is still on the Nikon D800 as the name of this yet to be released dream camera. I just like D800 better. :)

Regardless of whether it's called the D700x or the D800, I think this camera is definitely on it's way. I'm not sure about it being out by the end of the year, but considering the release timing of the Nikon D3 and the Nikon D3X, I can see it happening. On top of that, an October or early November release would have it on shelves in time for Christmas, allowing Nikon to give their sales and financial numbers a BIG boost before year end.

Here's the specs I said I wanted for the D800 in my Stuff I Want post.

Nikon D800 - a 24 Mega-pixel version of the D700. No video. No flip down LCD. Just that SUPER SWEET sensor from the D3X in a D700 body at around $4K. I'll buy one for sure!

I'm still thinking the same specs for the Nikon D700x (or D800 if I'm right), although, I'm re-thinking the video. It's highly likely that Nikon will put video in the D700x as it seems to be the latest rage right now. While it's not something I'm really interested in, I'm not opposed to it as long as it doesn't come at the expense of something else (price?).

I'm also thinking the D700x will have Nikon's built in sensor cleaning feature, and possibly the flip down LCD. I know I said no flip down LCD previously, but it makes sense that Nikon would want to make this camera as feature rich as possible. Nikon has a proud tradition of packing their DSLR's full of features, in direct contrast to Canon, who traditionally give their DSLR's (other than the flagships) a stripped down feature set.

Of course Nikon may not want to put ALL the latest features in the D700x for fear of hurting the D3X sales. I personally don't think this will be the case (just look at the D700 and D3 for a perfect example), but it's a valid point to consider.

In any case, heres my up-dated specs for the D700x (D800).
- 24 Megapixel Sensor (same one as the D3X)
- same body as the D700 / D300
- same feature set as the D700 but also adds...
- built in image sensor cleaning
- flip down LCD
- HD video movie mode
- microphone input jack for the HD video movie mode
- Live View Auto Focus in real time

Hopefully it won't be much longer now before we see how close I was on the specs. :)
