Is the Nikon D7000 replacing the Nikon D300s / D400?

Nikon D7000 DSLR
So impressive in fact, that it got Peter Gregg and myself thinking that perhaps Nikon is doing away with the Nikon D300s / D400 spot in the Nikon DSLR line-up.
Check out the anticipated specs of the D7000 as recently updated on NikonRumors.com...
- 100% viewfinder
- Dual SD memory card slots
- Magnesium-alloy body
- 16.2MP CMOS sensor (DX)
- Expeed 2
- 1080 HD video @24p 720 @30p (not sure about those)
- 20 min video recording (up from 5min on the D90)
- Save images from video (similar to the D3s)
- AF during video
- Stereo mic input for video
- 6 fps
- Virtual horizon (like the D300s)
- One touch video and/or live view (similar to the D3100)
- Improved ISO range: 100-25600
- 39 AF points
- Wireless flash
- Weather proof (like the D300s)
- New battery system
- Expected price: $1199 for body only
- Update: no swivel display
Sounds like everything and more that we might expect in a Nikon D400. Certainly a DSLR I'd take OVER the Nikon D300s.
So where does the Nikon D300s / Nikon D400 level of DSLR fit in the line-up?
Is Nikon eliminating the D300s / D400 level of camera?

Nikon D300s Available for Pre-Order

The Nikon D300s has been announced by Nikon.
Here's the Nikon page.
So lets look and see what Nikon actually came out with as compared to the rumored specs I discussed in my Nikon D300s rumors articles.
The big news with the Nikon D300s is the dual memory card slots and the video with full auto focus.
The Nikon D300s having dual memory card slots put the D300s in a league of its own. Nobody else has a camera in this range with dual cards slots. The D300s is a first of its kind in this regard. A lot of pros are going to buy the D300s for the dual card slots alone.
The other big news, perhaps even bigger than the dual memory card slots, is the D300s new video with auto focus. The video AF REALLY puts the Nikon D300s in a category all its own. No other DSLR has video with auto focus capability. The D300s is it. If you want a DSLR that does video with AF, you buy a Nikon D300s.
Also of note is the external stereo mic input on the D300s. This is a welcome feature that many people will like. Coupled with the HD video with AF, this may make the Nikon D300s the camera of choice for a fusion DSLR.
For me, while I'm happy that Nikon continues to deliver more features and continuous improvements, the D300s won't likely be finding its way into my camera bag. My trusty D300 bodies are working just great, and I see no need to replace them with the "s" update. :)

Nikon D3000, Nikon D300s, and Nikon D400 Rumour Updates
Rumours are flying around the internet hot and heavy right now about a supposed leak of Nikon's 2009-2010 road map.
The anticipated Nikon D300s is being said to have the following upgrades:
- full HD - no surprise there
- improved AF - always welcome but I've got not complaints with my pair of D300's
- dual cards slots with the addition of an SD card - that's one CF and one SD - nice feature
Basically, I still see no reason why I'd buy a pair D300s bodies to replace my D300 bodies.
The newly noted Nikon D3000 appears to be the long awaited D40 replacement. From the specs I've seen, the D3000 is a stripped down D5000 with no HDMI input, microphone input, or articulated LCD display.
No big surprises here. The D3000 seems like it'll be a great replacement for the D40. In typical smart and logical Nikon style, the D3000 would appears to be built from Nikon's existing parts inventory, something they Nikon does quite a bit.
If the D3000 is sporting the D5000 / D90 sensor in a small, stripped down body, it could just be the best choice yet for a light-weight, compact DSLR. I'm thinking it would be a great, low-priced, low-light camera option with a Nikon 50mm f 1.8 on it. Hmmm....
On a kind of dissapointing note, the rumors I'm seeing about the Nikon D400 have it at 13.8 megapixels with a stop better high ISO noise. Again, this is nothing that would make me upgrade from my current pair of D300 bodies. The extra 1.8 megapixels is nothing, and one stop better high ISO is nice, but nothing to write home about.
But remember, these are all still just rumours.
My guess would be that the D3000 rumours are pretty accurate. Same for the Nikon D300s rumours.
Now the Nikon D400, I think it will be closer to my specs from my Stuff I Want From Nikon post.
And if none of these cameras do it for you, there's always the Nikon D700x. :)
In the meantime, it's fun to read the rumours, guess what will be coming, and wait in eager anticipation, isn't it!
