Nikon D7000 vs Canon 60D Image Quality, High ISO Performance, and Auto Focus - Viewer Question

Today's viewer question is on the Nikon D7000 and the Canon 60D.

Prices: On Amazon I see the 60D being sold for $1,399 and the D7000 being sold for $1,499 they both include lenses so to me they are pretty neck and nect on that.

First Question:
What I want to know is the ISO performance of the two. I know that the D7000 is superior to the 60D in image quality, and ISO performance with lower noise. But is the 60D almost neck and neck with the D7000 in its image quality and ISO performance or can you distinctly notice image quality differences between the two?

Second Question:
In terms of focusing. The D7000 I'm aware has 39fp vs the 60D's 9fp. And the 9 cross-type focus points from the D7000 compared to the 60D's 1 cross-type focus point...I'm confused as to what cross-type focus points are. Can you please explain to me what that is and what needs are met from the focus and cross-type focus points from each camera.

Sigma 120-400mm APO DG OS and Canon 60D: Crosses, Spires, and Gargoyles

A slideshow of images shot with the Sigma 120-400mm APO DG OS on my Canon 60D. It was snowing out for most of these, and I found the 60D struggled a little with the focus in the snow.

As far as my impressions so far of the Sigma 120-400mm APO DG OS, it's VERY good! Quite sharp through-out the range, but sharpest from 120 to 300mm. Focus is fast, and I'm really enjoying this lens!

Canon 60D: Has Canon Secretly Improved the 60D Auto Focus and Kept It Hush Hush?

Continuing on in my testing of my new Canon 60D, I'm impressed with the auto focus. It seems much snappier and has less out of focus images than say my Canon T2i 550D or my previous Canon 40D for example.

Has Canon snuck in some improvements to the Canon 60D Auto Focus? Yes, the 60D has more cross-type sensors, but I'm a focus / recompose shooter for the most part so I wouldn't think these would make a difference.

Shooting both, I certainly get the impression that my Canon 60D is faster and more accurate than my Canon 550D (T2i).

Here's a couple of possible explanations...
